Style, style, style. Nabokov's sentences are knockouts. Especially considering English is Nabokov's second (maybe third?) language.
There is a large tradition of using literature as a way of dealing with "taboo" subjects. Lolita allows us to explore certain aspects of the psyche that would otherwise be overlooked.
But Lolita is about more than fucking underage girls. It's about a foreigner falling in love with American culture and American language.
It is also about literary seduction—Humbert Humbert is an awful, indefensible person, but his voice is irresistible, and (if the book works for you) you willingly follow along as he recounts the terrible things he's done.
Basically it's a really complicated, beautiful book, and a lot of the complexity and beauty comes from—not despite—the fact that Nabokov is willing to take us to some icky places.
