Almost positive you didn’t know about this and you genuinely got mixed up
Which is okay
pathetic lol

you are insane
if you dont think there are defintions that cannot change
like i cannot imagine a naturalist ever saying anything like this
silver clearly thinks that definitions/categories are some kind of fundamental truth. like god invented some categories and handed them to us, and it's just up to us to give them labels in each language. that's just obviously not true. we didn't just invent the labels, but the categories themselves as well.

this is so funny lmao silver says I never said words have strict definitions
but then in the same argument insists that there is such a thing as a "use definition" (which IS strict, but different from the "mention definition" which is not strict)
silver is going on about "use mention distinction" and trying to mock me for not getting it while he's trying and failing to shove/graft this completely different idea into his weird philosophy/religion/ontology of categories being objective rather than arbitrary. yeah sure there's a distinction between "use" and "mention" but that's a COMPLETELY different thing from what he was trying to use that to argue, which is objective categories.
and also, working back from the end of the argument, obviously silver would never agree trans women are women, so he can't allow himself to agree with any part of an argument that leads in that directionBrotherEyes — 06/21/2023 11:46 AM

no, we don't live in a universe of platonic ideals or objective definitions, except for some very specific / constructed concepts in mathematics and particle physics

for some very specific things like particle physics, yes. e.g. "electron" has an objective definition
anything more complicated, e.g. "chair" and definitely "woman", is a category invented by humans. we did not uncover a grand truth of the universe. there is nothing in our physical laws or the nature of our reality that separates "man" from "woman", in fact the boundaries get blurry a nontrivial percent of the time.

one of your arguments against the biological definition of woman is that we didn't know about chromosomes many years ago. first of all, i don't think biological sex is defined in terms of chromosomes. but let's just use the example of water. maybe we can agree that water is h2o. that was true, even before we knew about chemistry. that was the definition of water before anyone knew anything about chemistry, before we knew about h2o, back when aristotle thought water was just an element, nevertheless.
then silver SOMEHOW turns this around in his head into "water" having nothing to do with "woman" LOL
BrotherEyes — 05/12/2023 12:53 PM He doesn’t compare h2o to womenhood
BrotherEyes — 05/12/2023 12:32 PM The non vaush dude is a PhD it literally would be such an idiot move to say water is h20 therefore women are double X chromosomes
