fucking got me ok the entire point is to demonstrate directly to kids that some people look like this, they're fine, they're kind, they're nice, they'll read to you, they're not monsters
silver: Okay maybe I can warm up to the drag stuff if its not an expressional motive and intent. Dan literally is arguing that is their expressional right to do this in front of kids
me: for the 10000th time, i'm sorry if dan made a faulty argument, but i haven't seen this argument, let alone agreed with it
here's an angle i recommend you to think of it from
it's not like drag queens are invading classrooms. it's more like teachers/librarians are inviting all walks of life to come in and give story hour
you're focusing on the drag queen as the "bad guy", with a motive to indoctrinate kids or whatever
instead focus on the teachers, students, the school, the educational intent. why is this happening?
Okay maybe I can warm up to the drag stuff
a tiny percentage of people are handicapped, they use a wheelchair. it is a smaller percentage of the population than LGBT people. nevertheless, kids should be taught that people in wheelchairs are just like us, they are not monsters, they are not cyborgs, you shouldn't be afraid of them
let's say that the school decides to do a paraplegic story hour
the entire point is to demonstrate directly to kids that some people look like this, they're fine, they're kind, they're nice, they'll read to you, they're not monsters

example: sex ed, starting around puberty (in my case 6th grade), is not just fine, but extremely necessary. it requires explicitly showing things to kids, which is necessary
before that, i don't think there is an explicit need to show those things since kids won't see that yet probably
implicitly explaining how the world works and all the kinds of people in it, however, is very important

a couple reasons I find it deeply disturbing and mainly its because the content of a drag show is something which someone who hasn't gone through puberty could be deeply effective by negatively for the rest of their life in a traumatic sense. reality is most people are not trans and most people are not cross dressers. exposing a mega minority of people as if they are like everyone will warp their perception of women / men. for example A young child being exposed to pornographic content when they are young can have similar effects where they can no longer look at women in the same manner afterwards.
in contrast, if this was something which was not advocated in elementary schools but rather in middle / highschool, it would be much more palpable as they are undering sex transformations in their body and starting to form a gender identity.
i understand your concern in the first sentence, but i don't think that's true. of course, exposing kids to explicitly sexual stuff (e.g. literal porn) can totally be traumatic. but as we agreed a few minutes ago, a drag show is implicit. it is literally just makeup and clothing. i don't agree that it's a reasonable concern that it could affect people "for the rest of their life in a traumatic sense".
yes, most people are not trans. But, you will meet a lot of people in your life. thousands and thousands. some will be trans. among the bajillion other things that kids should be taught, one of them is the very simple idea of "some people look ambiguously gendered. they are not monsters, they are just like us". it's worth teaching, even though trans people are rare.
i don't agree that "starting to form a gender identity" starts with puberty. there is strong evidence that people's psychology has sex differences extremely early on.

So the reply is that you might hypothetically meet a trans person in your life so all children being exposed to drag in their youth is important so they wont offend them?
^ is this a strawmen or your actual position
leijurv — Today at 8:59 PM (in response to dan's first sentence which was "The whole idea of bringing a variety of people into schools is so that students learn that there are a krillion different people in the world, and so that they don't become biggots when they grow up, because they know that people deserve respect.")
i thought you agreed
with that part

I do

yes it is good to introduce kids to wide swaths of the diversity of the people they will probably meet in their life

But I dont think drag ought to be included in that
